Zeolite molecular sieves are widely used as moisture scavengers in diverse polyurethane CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers) systems. Trace moisture poses one of the most critical production challenges for polyurethane products, and zeolite molecular sieves serve as high-efficiency moisture scavengers to resolve this issue perfectly in polyurethane systems.
Why Polyurethane Systems Require Moisture Scavengers
The core chemical reaction in polyurethane production occurs between isocyanates and polyols. Isocyanates feature extreme sensitivity to moisture; even tiny amounts of moisture react with isocyanates and generate carbon dioxide. This unwanted reaction directly causes common defects like surface bubbling and weak adhesion, along with other corresponding product failures.
Moisture scavengers act as essential chemical additives in polyurethane formulations. They actively capture and eliminate moisture from raw materials and ambient environments, and block adverse moisture-isocyanate reactions in polyurethane systems.
Zeolite Molecular Sieves As Polyurethane Moisture Scavengers
Zeolite molecular sieves possess outstanding chemical stability and never react with isocyanates or polyols in polyurethane formulas. Meanwhile, they can efficiently and selectively adsorb trace moisture in standard polyurethane formulations and suppress harmful side reactions.
Zeolite molecular sieve used as polyurethane moisture scavengers are usually in powder form, which is also called activated zeolite powder or molecular sieve activated powder. Type 3A, 4A, 5A and 13X activated zeolite powders feature adjustable pore sizes, excellent dispersibility and high specific surface area, enabling them to adsorb trace moisture rapidly.
- 3A Activated Zeolite Powder
As the most widely used type, 3A activated zeolite powder fits nearly all polyurethane systems. Its 3Å pore size exclusively absorbs water molecules and avoids adsorbing polyols and catalysts, thus preventing the loss of key polyol and isocyanate components.
- 4A Activated Zeolite Powder
It delivers stronger water absorption capacity than 3A activated zeolite powder, yet it tends to adsorb polyols and small-molecule additives. 4A activated zeolite powder suits rigid polyurethane foam systems and other polyurethane formulas that demand ultra-low moisture content.
- 5A Activated Zeolite Powder
Type 5A activated zeolite powder has a larger pore size and only serves special polyurethane systems occasionally, such as rigid foams and formulas requiring high chemical resistance. However, it carries a high risk of secondary adsorption of active ingredients.
- 13X Activated Zeolite Powder
13X activated zeolite powder owns the largest pore size and achieves the most thorough water adsorption. It rarely applies to conventional polyurethane systems, and only works for high-polarity solvent systems and special prepolymer preparation scenarios.
