Automotive Industry Air Brake System Dehydration

Zeolite molecular sieve is a high-performance desiccant for air brake system dehydration. It sees extensive application in all types of transportation vehicles, delivering reliable dehydration protection for air brake assemblies on automobiles, trucks, buses, vessels and railway trains to prevent brake malfunctions.

Why Air Brake Systems Require Dehydration

Air brake system relies on ambient air, which contains water vapor and has a higher moisture concentration after compression. And the condensed water vapor is target that needs to be processed.

Condensed water vapor travels through pipelines to reach every component of the brake system, undermining the performance and shortening the service life of internal pipes and air tanks. When water mixes with lubricating oil and dust in the system, it easily causes pipeline and component blockages.

Brake fluid features strong hydrophilicity. Residual moisture inside the brake system makes the fluid vaporize under high working temperatures and produce gas bubbles. These bubbles disrupt normal brake pressure, leading to spongy brake pedal feel or complete brake failure.

In low-temperature environments, residual water freezes inside the brake system. The resulting ice blocks critical pipelines and control valves, causing valve jamming and brake malfunction. This poses severe safety hazards and can trigger major traffic accidents.

Working Principle of Air Brake Dehydration

Manufacturers commonly install zeolite molecular sieves inside air dryers in air brake systems. As compressed air flows through the air dryer, the molecular sieve absorbs moisture thoroughly and ensures the system outputs fully dry air.

In the adsorption stage, compressed air passes through the zeolite molecular sieve layer. The sieve’s unique microporous structure firmly traps water molecules and removes moisture from the air stream.

In the regeneration stage, the air brake system initiates a regeneration cycle via dry air backwashing or thermal heating. This process releases the trapped moisture from the molecular sieve, restores its adsorption capacity, and enables repeated cyclic use.

Molecular Sieve Types For Air Brake Dehydration

Type 4A zeolite molecular sieve is the mainstream desiccant for standard air brake systems. It boasts excellent water adsorption capacity and cost efficiency, making it ideal for low-dew-point air drying scenarios, including air dryers for trucks and buses.

Composite desiccants blending 4A or 3A zeolite molecular sieve with activated alumina cater to high-standard dehydration demands. They work perfectly for heavy-duty vehicles, railway brake systems, and high-performance air dryers that require long service lifespans and superior oil resistance.
